i asked this question in someone else's thread oops!
I bought a tupperware 100L container (roughly 3.5ft long X 18 wide X 16ft high) as a home for when i get my hedgy - and i wonder how or what do i use to make holes in tupperware container?? i know i need to make air holes and also in case i want to use a piece of pvc pipe to attach to another.

thanks in advance

I don't have a hedgehog, but in my experience, I have used a wood burner to melt the plastic and make a hole. Now I don't know if this is safe for animals (I've never done it to anything for them), but the other thing you could try is a sharp blade...just apply pressure on a knife against the plastic wherever you want to make a hole...then twist the blade around, and it will make a nice, even hole. Beware of stabbing it though...that could case sharp edges that could hurt you or your baby!

I just use a hand drill and drill around the edge and then sand down the edges. I think as long as you try to make sure there are no sharp edges then use whatever works for you. :)

ok illinidairychic, when u say hand drill does it matter if its electric or jus old fashion manual drill? cuz i know the electric drill can melt plastic and the harden the melted pieces are tuff to get rid off

You can also use a blow dryer to warm the plastic and a dremel tool to cut plastic :)

I use a sodering iron and it works great! You need to do it in an area with good ventilation, because the plastic stinks! Also, if you want a larger area with better ventilation, you use an electric saw of some type (jigsaw or something, once a hole is made to start it) to cut an open area, then use screen (like for a sceen door) or other porous material over the hole. You can attach screen material with a glue gun. I have a glue gun, but had to buy a sodering iron. It was only about $10 from Walmart.

I use a cordless electric drill with a small spade bit for drilling air holes in my cages. Yes, it does melt the plastic a bit, but typically it is easy to pull the melted peices off, and the slight amount of melting helps the edges not be quite so sharp. As far as the hole for the pvc pipe, I would get a hole bit in the appropriate size for your drill.

That's a good idea Julie!!! I bet it cuts down on sharp edges that way!! I find even with a soldering iron you can occasionally get that little sharp piece so I always file mine down...
