How hot or cool will it have to be in a room for a chinchilla to not overheat. I got a book saying that it cant get over 60 degrees. Will a fan next to the cage help?

I have heard that chins can be ok at temps up to 70 degrees. Any higher than that and you may want to consider getting a granite or marble tile to put in your chins cage. Or a terra cotta flower pot. These stay relatively cool, but if you need to cool your chin down quick, you can stick the tile or pot into the freezer for a few minutes to really cool it down.

I've heard anything over 75 degrees will kill them. I keep my apartment at about 65-68 degrees and they do just fine. I also live in Colorado and at this time of year the temperature outside reaches about 50 degrees so I leave the chin room window open so the air conditioning is not constantly going off.

A fan won't do anything, as chins can't sweat. An air conditioner would be ideal. Chins can handle temperature up to about 70, and if the temperature is changed very gradually, they can survive ever higher. The temp in my house is usually between 67-69.

when using a fan, you can always use it for circulation.. no, do not set it right at the chin, (wont do no good) but absolutely use it to help move the air around... with a/c running, and fan's, that air will be nice and cool..
dusty stays in temps of around 70-73.. and does fine.. and yes, has also seen 75!! oh no... lets everyone overreact to that one..
we live in high humidity, lots of heat.. the air does what it can... so yep, sometimes it is still warm... and dusty does totally fine... just chillin on his shelve's..
don't use the above as a guideline for your's... it is my personal case, and i know it's ok for my chin...

I am not allowed to have air conditioning in my apartment as we don't pay the power bill, and no, they won't change it. SO, I do use lots of fans, and my chinnys love to sit in front of them...they are so cute. I do have a cooler room where I keep them when it gets too hot. I also keep water bottles and ice packs in the freezer to use if necessary. I did have one baby that got too hot during playtime, but the ice pack helped immensley.

this has been freakin me out lately too. in my apartment with the ac running, it gets between 62-67 degrees normally. the past few days though, it has been chilly outside, so i turn off the ac and it has been about 68-71 degrees. Andey has done fine at both temps. i would just keep a fan running, but not blowing on the chin, to keep the air circulating, and have open windows if it is cool outside, and an ac on if it is warm outside. i also have a chin-chiller in Andey's cage that he sits on occasionally.

I've heard nothing over 75 too. They do have marble plates for chinny's at Petsmart now, I've heard those work well. But blowing fans on them definately won't help, gotta get that temp down. And watch those ice packs....they will chew them!

Really, it seems to also depend on the humidity. We have really low humidity in the room HanPan is in. We have a thermometer that keeps track of humidity and temp. HanPan's room has gotten over 75 degrees before, but we took the necessary precautions, and my boyfriend got an ear full from me about letting his step mother turn the AC off. We've decided to invest in one just for his room so that the chinnie won't effect the rest of the household. HanPan's ears were still cold, but we put her chin chiller in just in case, and everything turned out fine.

chinchillas don't sweat. A fan is okay to spread a/c air nothing replaces a/c and marble is good to put in the cage and icec bottles but it won't save them from humidity. In my opinion 68 is about the highest you can go temp wise. But it also depends on where you live humidtiy level and what the temperatures are. I'm in cali and it gets way hot I keep my a/c in my room on 65 in the summer for my chin....winter it gets cold thats when I move it up to 70 degrees because its cold outside.
