I know in order to sell Hedgies you have to be USDA licensed, however is that just if your breeding to sell?
I have been searching and still can not find the answer I'm looking for. Currently I have an Algerian Chocolate Hedgie (female), that I just feel is not getting the attention she deserves :( ... she is approx. 15 months old, so would I be able to put her up for sale? Or should I try putting her up for adoption with an adoption fee?
I am so focused on my chinnies and poor cookie seems to be left out, and I don't like feeling like I'm neglecting her in the "attention" department.

I do not believe that you are allowed to sell her but I know that you can put her up for adoption with an adoption fee...either way its just semantics because call it what you will either act still results in the trading of the animal for monetary gain. anyway...minor rant so i would go the adoption route if i were you I am sure you can find someone on here who is willing to give her all the attention she deserves.

I planned on finding her a "good" home that she deserves ... just wasn't sure how to go about it "legally".
She is well cared for here, just isn't getting the attention I feel she truly deserves.

USDA doesn't futz with people who are rehoming a single hedgehog. That said, instead of selling her, why not look into allowing a rescue to place her into a screened home? There are very active hedgehogs rescues in your area. You might want to contact HWS at www.hedgehogwelfare.org (http://www.hedgehogwelfare.org) for help.

you don't need to be USDA licensed to sell hedgehogs. You only need a USDA license if you have 3 or more breeding females.

Katie,
That's not exactly true. You have to have a license for re-sale which falls under another class than a breeder's license and you always have to have that to re-sale technically. That being said Nancy is right in that the USDA doesn't care about one or two hedgehogs, it's a large scale number or a pattern of sales they look for.
Edited to add: Also, if they really wanted to hang you they could do so by saying you had enough females to breed. You have to be licensed if you have more than 3 females of breeding age in permanent residence because they then have the "ability" to breed. It's an interesting loop hole...
