I am a chin girl. Always have been and will be. This forum has REALLY got me interested in hedgehogs. I WILL own one one day. But in the meantime . . . .

Since I am hedgehog stupid I have a really funny question. Please don't boo at me.

Are hedgehogs born with quills? :blush: Does it hurt the mother or make her bleed when it comes out of the birth canal? Chinseys are born with lots o fur, so I was wondering if hedgehogs are born with lots of quills? :hmmmm:

Nope, they arent born with them, they do however grown in REALLY fast. They dont get thick & prickley until a few days though!

They are born with them -sort of-. Only instead of being all pokey like they are when they are older, they are born with them under the surface of the skin. This way they pass safely through the birth canal- without hurting poor mom! Ive heard that as shortly as a few hours after birth the quills begin poking through the skin :)

Thats what Ive heard/read. I havent had any first had experience with hoglets myself.

yeah, when they are first born they are pretty smooth, then it seems like a matter of hours later they get really thin quills in that get harder by the day!!!

Wow! Nature is so amazing. Why hasn't animal planet made a special about hedgehogs? That's amazing and extreme!!

They should do something on hedgies! I would watch it.......well I think any hedgie owner would watch it.....lol

I would suggest taking a peek at the pics in the Hedgehog Babies section. You can oooohhh and awwwww over all the cute little babies in there :hearts: (Warning though....after looking at the pics you might just want to run to the store/breeder and get one for yourself!)
