I've searched on this site to see if my question had already been answered, but I only found similar questions that were for hedgehogs, but I have a chin. My question is this: I use Kaytee bedding, and I put newspaper under it for ease of cleaning since I don't have a pull out tray. As far as I have heard, newspaper is ok, but that was for hedgehogs. Cedric eats it, and I wanted to make sure that this was ok. Is it ok that I line the plastic bottom with newspaper and then top it with bedding??? Any responses will be greatly appreciated!

If he eats it, that could cause blockage, which leads to constapation. I wouldnt put the newspaper. What type of bedding do you use? Wood shavings, Carefresh, etc.? If its wood shavings make sure its kild dried if its pine. Also, you can put newspaper at the bottom and then put a lot of bedding on top, but make sure he cant get to the newspaper.

The ink is bad for him. I wouldn't use it. You need to make sure the Kaytee is safe for him. If it is pine, then it needs to be kiln dried. Cedar isn't safe either. You can use Carefresh and Aspen also. I buy Aspen at Tractor Supply Company, you can get all the other safe types also. It is a lot less expensive than the pet store. Cleaning the cage is just all part of it..it will get a lot easier. The shavings and poop will end up scattered throughout the house. They end up in the weirdest places.

I use Kaytee Soft-Sorbent. It is similar to Carefresh...I got a chinchilla starting kit with the cage I got that included the bedding, water bottle, food, etc. I didn't use the food it came with since it wasn't the food they fed him at the pet store. I

Do NOT use newspaper it will make your chinchilla's coat horrible and blacken their feet. Plus, they will eat it. Kaytee soft sorbent is healthy, but watch out for their pine since it has aromatic oils in it.

Thanks! Good to know that Soft-Sorbent is safe. I was kinda worried about that. I'll pull the newspaper out right now! Thanks for the help from all of you!
