On December16th I put two of my females with two other males (they were in seperate cages of course). One of the females had her litter at 42 days and is doing fine. But i am worried about the other one. Today is 51 days since her and the male were put together, and she still hasn't had her babies. I have no doubt that she is pregnant. She has gained weight and you can see that her abdomen is larger. Also everytime i go to check on her she is very tence and immidiatly rolls up into a ball and stays like that after i leave. Ussually she is fine with me and doesn't go into a ball. What should I do? Is there anything I can do? :dunno:

The real question is how long has it been since the male and female were SEPERATED? Hedgehogs don't necessarily get pregnant on the very first day they are together, so you should also check to see how long it has been since the two were moved to seperate cages.
Gaining of weight is not a definate sign that she got pregnant, however. I have had some girls gain LARGE amounts of weight and appear extremely pregnant, and then no babies ever appeared. The attitude change does lean towards her being pregnant, and probably close to being due. Still no guarantee, but at least an encouraging sign.

If you are getting an ultra sound, I've NEVER had one come out accurate. In the three hogs done it was the opposite of what they thought every time....I hope she pops soon, keep us updated :)

Let us know ok? Hope she is alright and not having trouble. My vet told me though that ultrasounds are hard to tell if they are pregnant on small animals. Cause I wanted him to do one for my chin when I found out he was mis-sexed and was actually female. I got a surprise baby 1 month later.

Maybe she has a false pregnancy. I had a girl that gained weight, ate like a pig and had every sign of pregnancy but no babies.
How is she doing today? :)

Speaking of which, last weekend at Stasi's gathering I met a hedgehog who did exactly that. From the time she was bred she began gaining weight. And grew and grew and grew and grew and OMG she's the size of a small football! And you can't see her feet! Never had any babies but just kept eating for 7. Before being bred she was of normal size and appetite.

The vet took an x-ray to see if there were any little hedgie skeletons in her and we found that she isn't pregnant. :cry2: Now, that is the least of my worries. I found out that all 6 of my hedgies have mites! The poor babies. The vet suggested that she is grouchy and won't unroll from a ball because the mites are bothering her, and not from pregnancy.

Oh I'm sorry!!! I hope they will be okay. What kind of bedding do you use. I read on here that using shavings can do that? So I'm going to get a bunch of liners from Nancy. My chinnies give them kisses and hope they feel better soon.
