Skippy passed away at 1:00pm, February 5th, 2005. He was two years old, and he had been with us since August 2004.
On the night of Feb 4th, we noticed that Skippy wasn't very active, but he ate hay and food, so we thought he was just tired. When I went out at about 12:30 on the 5th, I noticed that Skippy was sleeping on his food bowl. I quickly opened the cage and took him out, and he was having trouble breathing and couldn't move. We immediately called the vet and left the house. We got to the vet's office by 12:55, and Skippy seemed to be getting worse. We took him in, and then sat in the waiting room. After about ten minutes, the vet came out and told us that Skippy had passed the minute we brought him in. They said they tried CPR, but there was nothing else they could do. He couldn't breath, but they weren't sure why. We are going to have a necropsy done, and then he will be cremated.
At least I got to spend his last few minutes with him. I hope that he realized how much I loved and cared for him. He was my first chinchilla, and I will always remember him.
The vet suggested that we take his footprint to help remember him by. It is of his front right paw.
I now realize how hard it is to lose a favorite pet. But I know that death is a part of life, and the best thing for me to do now is spend extra time with Nut to help him get over the loss of Skippy.
