I have a small herd, three females, so I don't have too many litters over the course of a year. Lately though I have been getting a TON of people requesting a male and a female both from seperate litters. For breeding I imagine! I am not worried about competition or anything; I don't breed for profit at all, I just want my hoglets to go to good homes!
I just wanted to start a thread asking you hedgehog breeders out there what you sell your hoglets for, pet or breeder.
Also if any breeder have a good way to screen potential owners and want to share how I would appreciate it!
Not really sure if this qualifies as "debate".... :p

I ask $100.00 per hoglet, all sexes, all colors. I think thats a fair asking price since i hand tame them all & i dont want to just give them away for nothing. People willing to spend a bit tend to care more for the pet. I dont think $100.00 is bad at all for any exotic pet really, but i do know of quite a few people who sell for less or more.. its kinda one of those to each his own things.
All mine also come with pedigrees, which helps.
As for screening, i make sure to ask a lot of questions to the potencial buyer, so i know what THEY know about the pet they are getting. (like cage, bedding, food, playtime, life span, & so on.) It helps ease my mind that the young will be going to a good home & not someone impluse buying. (you can also send home care sheets & be sure to give out your contact info for any questions, comments, or concerns they may have.)
I make all the people buying animals for me sign a contract. The contract states that at time of sale the animal is in good condition(health) & that if for ANY reason they decide they cannot care for it, im to be notified so i can get the animal back & or help them to rehome it to a GOOD, safe home & not just someone else to rehome it or a shelter. (i know this probly doesnt always help, but a contract is a contract & it is a legal document not only to help cover myself, but also the pet.) Most people signing something are going to stop & think for a bit before taking things to the next level. You can normally weed out the 'bad guys' when you tell them they have to sign something. haha
Oh, i also ask if the hog will be a potencial breeder, if yes, i make sure to ask them about the breeding program they are doing & of course what all is needed for breeding. Its also a good idea to remind them this is not a get rich quick thing & sometimes they may have a REALLY hard time selling the young, therefore they should always have back up caging/supplies to make sure all the animals can be caged accordingly to sexes, ages, etc, safely!
Good luck & trust your judgement, it will pay off!
