When I get my hedgehog I was wondering if he would be able to go to my fiance parents house with me for a weekend trip sometimes? The car drive is 1 1/2 hours and it would be in the day, would he be utterly annoyed? Could I put him in a travel bag like Nancy of the Hedgie Den has on her site and keep it on my lap for the drive? We would take his cage for him to stay in while there.
Also how do they do in new enviroments, can they travel around with you to visit? I mean I wouldn't do it in the day but at night. Or would he be scared? I just would like one of those travel bags and think it would be neat to take him with me every once and awhile.

When I take any of mine in the car, I use a small cat carrier and buckle it in. This is much safer than keeping hedgie on your lap. In the event of an accident being buckled into a carrier keeps him from going flying or possibly being crushed by the air bag.
The best thing when going overnight is to take his cage, wheel and everything that he has at home but often this is not possible. Some people have special smaller cages that they take travelling and as long has it has enough room for the wheel and his normal bedding a smaller cage is fine for a few days. If you will be travelling often to his parents perhaps having a second cage at their place would be the easiest and then you can just take his wheel and bedding with you.
I take some of mine out visiting quite often. People in some of the stores I frequent can't wait for them to visit and everytime I walk in they are all looking to see if someone is with me. I have them in the hauler bags I make when in the stores and I've gone through many stores that nobody had a clue I had a hedgehog in my 'purse'. Yup, I always talk to my 'purse'.
Some of mine just love going visiting. Smokey will not stay in his bag, he has to be held up to see where he is going and he gets quite upset if we try keeping him in his bag. Needless to say, he can't go in certain stores that would not appreciate having a critter in full view.
I have a write up on my website about travelling with your hedgehog. TheHedgieDen - hedgehog care (http://www.freewebs.com/thehedgieden/hedgehogcare.htm) It's down near the bottom of the page. :)

Thanks Nancy! I will be able to fit his cage in the car no problem, I've picked up my new huge chin cages and fit them in the back before. :)
Your site is awesome! :applause: I'm going to use a lot of info. from on here and your site to make myself a care booklet; and also to have on hand for someone babysitting (we usually go away once a year). My mom does the sitting and she is going to be so happy ;) when I tell her that there is one more critter she has to keep track of. I have little booklets all over the place for her!
Oh just a quick thought I'm thinking the car might be hard to regulate the temp. In the winter with the heat- still too cold. In the summer- too hot without air conditioning, too cold with it? Wow I am paranoid but I think these are good questions. Should I get a car temp. thing?
***Btw when you get pics of some of the new star fabric let me know, I'm really excited to order from you. It's going to cost this poor student a pretty paycheck but worth it! :hearts: I spend all my spare money on them and none on me. Going to look for a cage tomorrow and then I can let you know the size.

I think it depend on each hegehog. My Litchi got sick and vomited on the a little 15 minutes trip (tho the routes in Quebec are crap and full of hole...). But some other hedgehog doesn't seem to mind. On the temperature side, I think it sould be like at home, not too hot or too cold.

For me at least, my vet is about 75 minutes away from where I live. So any trip to the vet is fairly close to what you are describing. Even when she was under the weather, Tiegen did just fine with that journey. I just put an excess of fleece and towels as well as a Snuggle Safe Disc inside the cat carrier. Same setup when I bring the much-friendlier Rilla to the Farmer's Market. She just loves all of the smells and the light doesn't seem to bother her too much.
Just make sure you bring water from home with also.
