Hi, not sure about this since reading the threads so I though I'd ask. I was going to build something for my hedgie out of wood but looked up old threads and one person said that mites hide in wood and so not to have it in the cage. But I've seen some cages on here that were built for their hedgies out of wood. So my question is should it be used? I want to prevent mites as best as I can.

Using wood to build a cage will not give your hedgies mites and as long as your hedgie never gets mites, there will not be a problem. However if he does get a mite outbreak, wood is just about impossible to get rid of mites in.
I have a huge hedgie condo unit that houses 12 hedgehogs. It's made of wood. So far I've been very lucky and never had a mite outbreak (touch wood, cross fingers, say a prayer) but I know if I ever do, that condo will have to go.

Thanks again! I'm actually just going to build him a house to sleep in and such out of wood. So if need be I can always chuck it, it will just be an added thing and his cage will be fine as it won't be made out of it.

I'm going to be in a bridge too! I'll post pics when I get it done! Have you posted any of your Lily's cage?

Bosco has a wooden sleeping spot made out of one of those giant reptile logs. My dad helped me put a front and a back on it, so its like a little cave for him.
I can link to some pics if anyone is interested.

I would not recommend using a wood hideout in the cage simply because wood is porous and the urine and fecal matter can get into it and it would be impossible to clean.
You could look into a sealer, but then you may have to worry about the hedgehog chewing on it and it potentially being toxic.
