View Full Version : How to Introduce Mates??

I have been breeding Chins for awhile, and have never had trouble putting Chins together for breeding, until now.
I have a BV Female who has decided no matter what mate I try to put next to her, she has an instant dislike for them. I put their cages next to each other and the poor boy has no chance. She stays as far away as possible and if they meet on the same side of adjoining cages, she will try to pee on him. I am almost scared to put a male in with her as she doesn't like them when they are next to her, what will she do when they are in the same cage. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. :dunno:

Have you tried letting her out for supervised playtime with her prospective mate? Some chinnies are just irritable. I have a female that hates all other chinnies besides her mate, so I know what you are going through. How long have you kept the cages next to eachother?

These 2 have been side by side for about a month. I had tried a previous male and the same thing happened. When I let these 2 out together for play time, they go opposite directions like if they have the plague. I am beginning to wonder if maybe she is just to growly for a mate. I have also heard that BV's are known for this type of behavior?

Hi! I have had some luck putting the "problem" chin in a smaller cage inside the other chin's big cage and then switching every 1-2 days for a week. After that, I clean out the big cage and put them both in together and watch them until I feel like they're both safe. I've done this with two females who were very aggressive towards the other chin, and it was successful both times. This was after I tried having two cages side-by-side for awhile and trying the "smoosh" method.
The only thing I had to modify was putting something solid (a piece of cardboard, a metal plate, etc.) on top of the smaller cage so that if the chin in the bigger cage stood on top of the smaller cage his/her toes wouldn't get bitten by the chin in the smaller cage...if that makes any sense :) Hope that helps!

I will try that, everything else seem sto have failed, I am almost ready to give up on her. I will do some cage modifying and let you know how it goes.
I've tried the smaller cages and it worked. After spending two months trying to get them together:)

Good for you.. some animals just have a mind of their own
I have found that swapping cages every night for a week or so seems to work.

You know, I've found black velvets to be the slowest breeders AND the toughest to introduce. I wonder why that is?
We use the smoosh method, but have several options described here http://www.spoiledchins.net/introductions.htm

It is working, I put one Chin in a smaller cage inside the other cage and I noticed that they are sitting closer together. I am so happy!! THANK All of you for the great advice.
