I hardly ever see our hedgie in the daylight, she sleeps when the sun is up.
Young hedgies do poop everywhere. Ours started out that way but now poops in the litter pan.
Make sure you have the same diet he is used to eating already so he doesn't have any tummyaches and give him a couple of weeks for you to get used to each other.
All sounds normal so far.

If you just brought him home last night, I would certainly leave him alone for a couple of days so he can get use to his new enviornment. Yes they will poop alot when stressed. Put an old smelly tee-shirt in his cage so he can get use to your scent. Hedgies sleep most of the day so don't count on seeing him much.
Congrats on your new little guy.:)
Does he have a name?

Check out Hedgehog World (http://www.hedgehogworld.com/) for some great info on dealing with your new hedgehog. There are some care articles there that will help you with socialization and better understanding of your new pet.
Give your hedgehog a few days to adjust to his new home.

it's normal for young hedgie to poop everywhere, my Litchi is a poop machine! Hedgehog are active at night so it's normal he want to hide during the day.
