View Full Version : Socializing a pregnant chin?

I got a new chin yesterday that I have since found out may be pregnant. No idea how far along she may be. I'm worried about socializing her while she is pregnant, it's stressful adjusting to a new home and I don't want to endanger her or the babies. Would it be safe if I move very slowly?

Where exactly do you want to move her to? I do let my pregnant chins have run time (abbreviated) and they do fine, but they are used to being here, used to the routine. If she's new to you, and possibly new to free time, I would probably not move her very much until after the kits are born.
Get yourself a gram scale from Wal-Mart ($25.00 or so) and weigh her every couple weeks. If there's a steady weight gain, and she's an adult, odds are she's pregnant. That won't tell you when she's due, but it will at least let you know if she is or not.
Some people believe you shouldn't ever touch a pregnant female, but I think that's silly. I visit with mine, give them chin scritches, hold them if they hop out of the cages. Do I take to the Bahamas? No. But if they are used to the routine here, then I don't change it unless there is a need to.

Sorry, by move I meant will playing with her be ok if I just take my time, not get her overexcited and so on.

I don't think my nerves will survive this. Upgrade from maybe a grandma to probably. She's still too skittish for me to touch but I've been looking at her back end. She really has 'a swing in her back porch'. I can't stand it, I don't even have a clue what color the babies might be. 111 +/- 30ish? = 81 days of insanity. :banghead:

I wouldn't see a problem with you socializing her to you slowly. My second pedigreed female came to me pregnant as well. I got her a month before she gave birth. She is very laid back and she got her playtime right up until 3 days before the birth(she didn't want to move around very much). Every chin is different, she let me know she didn't want to play.
Also, you should read the pregnancy threads on this forum. They will let you know what to expect and about the extra nutrition that will help her(ex. 50/50 sugar free cranberry juice mixture in her water) :)
