Is there such thing as Cancer and Tumor PREVENTION in Hedgehogs??? I knwo that in potbellied pigs certain bloodlines are more prone to problems. Plus, females have a MUCH higher risk of cancer and tumors and cysts then do males...and if you get her spayed then it GREATLY reduces it..but if you dont you can pretty much count on having problems. Does any of this happen with hedgehogs? do they ever need to be fixed if you dont breed them and your want a M/F together? Looking for these questions to be answered... I didnt see anything about them in the diff postings and also didnt see anything about it in the diff sites around the web. Get back to me :) THANK YOU!

Some people say that if you spay the females (obviously assuming they aren't going to breed), that reproductive cancers are less likely. I don't know how true this is and I don't believe anyone has ever done an official study on it. IMO, spaying is a very delicate and complicated procedure and should only be done if it is medically necessary. There is always a big risk with anastesia and surgery.

If you want more then 1 hedgehog, you would be wise to get females. If you keep a male and a female, you would either have to risk a spay or keep them separated. That means NO putting them together for 10 secs while you clean a cage. That generally leads to babies at some point (they are quick, and what happens if you get distracted by the door bell or phone. A lot of people say that it won't happen to them...... until it does.)
