Do you think people should rename a chin that was given a name by the past owner. Does it make a difference if it is a kit or an older chin?? Just wondering. I have renamed and later thought that it was not right, so I swiched back to their "given" name.

then if you have kits born do you name them before selling or not?

I don't know about naming kits b/c I don't breed but if I did I probably would BUT for getting a chin for someone I tin renaming is fine. Its YOUR pet name it what you please unless you like the "given" name. I'm sure it dosen't make any difference with age- from what I understand most aren't like cats or dogs and don't even know thier names. :)
Its yor pet name it whatever you want so its even more a piece/reflection of you. :)

I don't name a kit if I plan to sell it because they do learn their name.

I have two and each of them knows his own name and responds when I call him!

I won't change a chin's name if they are older because I am pretty sure that they learn to recognize it. Amissa runs into the front corner of the cage when I call her name and starts chortling [it's hard to describe the sound but it's different than her feed me tone]. I prefer to be able to name my chin because all my animal's names are special and say something about the pet.

Wow I must be an oddball being the only one who answered, my chin, my name.

Personally, unless the previous owner REALLY worked with the animal, I don't think they know their name, and wouldn't give a rats butt if it was changed :) (Then again, I actually call all my chins "baby" or "bubbers" or some kinda pet name other than their REAL names.)

I've only have one animal come to me previously named, and that was Abubuca (formerly, Stuart).

Also, Stuart Stewart doesn't sound great either, rofl.

And when I end up with kits, yes I do plan on naming them.. but really only to keep them a little easier to remember, and have a little fun with it :) Some say that naming your kits makes it harder to sell or part with them, but we'll see.

I am with Cathy, I do not name the kits I will sell, because then I will get even more attached to them and they will get used to that name. The new owner might not like it and rename.

If I get an older chin, I usually keep the name given by the previous owner unless I absolutely don`t like it. I know that my Chins know their names.

I used to name my kits i sold, but i learned pretty fast that is not a good idea for the attachement factor.

I dont agree that they know their names though. I know MANY people on here will STRONGLY dissagree with me & claim that they DO know their names, but in my 12+ years of owning them none that i have had ever seemed to act as though they KNOW their name.. the sound of my voice & or the treat jar, yes, but not their name. I guess its possible, but not too likely.

I dont think it hurts at all to change their name. If i buy one & its named chin chin, chilly, andy, or something EXTREMELY common like that, i change it. I like more unique names, so i tend to want to name my animals myself.

I do have a few i bought with names & they have stayed the same just because that particular name really seemed to fit them for some reason, but its not often that happens.

Its one of those to each his own things, JMO!

Personally, its my chin, my name...It depends if I like the name or not. When I got Maya, her name was Cindy, and I dont like the name Cindy, plus I wanted an M name so i changed it to Maya...I kinda feel bad cuz shes about 8 months old, and knows her name, but I just didnt like the name Maya. Guess it all depends

I think that if it's your animal you should pick it's name. My personal thing is that if the animal really does know it's name you shouldn't rename it.
