Personally, I like Purina Kitten Chow and Purina One. Wait, rephrase, I like to use....... *I* don't like it because, well, *I* don't eat it, but I digress......

Anyway, you'll get a lot of arguments about foods and quality, and I don't have the energy to go into all that right now. Basically, I like to mix the higher quality with some medium quality like Purina and Special Kitty. I find that my hedgehogs do better and stay trimmer. When I used all high quality, my hedgehogs got fat and I had a high rate of fatty liver (still feeling the fallout from that. I lost Port about 2 weeks ago).

That's the short version. The longer version is either in a thread on this board or on Hedgehog World.

I stay off the topic of the Purina. On its own I wouldnt bother. Mixed with higher quality foods- perhaps.

Cheese is alright in moderation.
No hot dog- too high in sodium.
No lemon juice- could upset his tummy
Salmon is fine as long as it isnt the canned stuff - also high in sodium.

Purina One is a higer quality then just the kitten chow. I use both Kitten mixes on my pregger mothers and have never had a proble with it. The Purina one acutally has Chicken as it's first ingredient rather then a meal or by product. I have them on a mix of a couple of foods, which gives them more variety. Everyone has their favorite foods and there are theories on which is the best because of this or that. I generally read labels rather then fuss over brands.

I have Purina One Healthy Weight Management in my mix. My girl loves it- she won't eat anything new without it being mixed with the Purina One first. I don't really have a problem with using it in a decent mix, but I've stopped feeding it alone as i have been advised by many not to. I also have CSFTCLS Adult Lite and Solid Gold Katz n Flocken in my mix, so it balances it out pretty well.

Some petstores sell hedgehog food...the commercially made ones anyway, which are bad to feed to hedgies anyway.

Higher scale petstores sell at least a few varieties of the food that is actually recommended for hedgehog consumption.

The Purina one acutally has Chicken as it's first ingredient rather then a meal or by product.

Chicken meal actually gives you more meat than just chicken. In any meal the meat is cooked and THEN weighed- meaning it has lost 66% of its weight in fat and water. For chicken, just the chicken is put in- so youre getting alot of weight in water, fat etc, instead of chicken. By going with a meal youre getting about 5 times the meat you do with just meat itself not in meal form.

I just prefer it over the by product crap....

What does it matter what you feed them? I mean hello they live in the wild what do you think they eat all the time in the wild.........they could be eating animal poo.
