View Full Version : Getting Hedgie Out In The Daytime?

Hi all,

Well, Ci Wei seems to be doing well. My biggest problem is that I'm afraid to get him up to spend time with him during the day, and oftentimes I am totally exhausted at night and don't have the energy to keep an eye on my "runner," even if he's asleep on my lap, since once in a great while he'll wake up and decide to make a break for freedom, and I have to be prepared. I love spending time with him, and while he has lots of energy, he can also be a bit of a cuddler at times. It really just depends on the day. Some days he's grumpy, some days he's active, and some days he's in a cuddly mood. But my question is this: I've thought about getting him out earlier in the day and letting him sleep and ride along in my hoodie while I'm up and about at home (I work mostly from home as a writer), but am afraid to disturb his natural hedgie sleep pattern. In the past, when I have gotten him out during the daytime to show to friends, he has tolerated it pretty well and seems to snuggle quickly back to sleep after I put him back in his cage. I haven't tried getting putting him in the hoodie during the daytime, but that would certainly take a lot of the stress off of me regarding having to spend time with him each night. This way, he would be spending time with me during the day (and in a warmer spot, no less), and then could come out again at night when I'm feeling up to it. Have any of you tried this with a hedgie? If so, what were your experiences like? Are there certain signs I should look for that would tell me if Ci Wei isn't sleeping enough? I want him to be happy and healthy, but I also want to enjoy the time I spend with him, rather than always being exhausted and making it feel at times like a chore (especially when he's in an active or grumpy mood). I love the little guy to death, so I thought I'd check with you guys before I try taking him out in the afternoons. Thanks in advance for any advice you can give.

If I remember my research correctly, hedgehogs are fine to be awake about an hour or two during the afternoon. I take Hemi out during the day sometimes, and play with her, and then put her back in her bag so she can sleep on my lap.

I've also found that hedgehogs do learn a routine. Since I'm in school, I can't play with Hemi until about 6pm. She knows that's when I get home, and she's usually awake and waiting. Then I do a belly check and cuddle her for a while until supper. She's fine with it, and will bed back down when I put her back in her cage.
