Just wondering what everyones opinion is on this. Personally I don't charge to deliver a chin. I figure that the person is already paying a decent amount of money for a chin, why charge more? Thats my opinion. I've actually traveled 3 hours to deliver a chin and wouldnt take any aditional for gas.

It depends on how far I have to go. If I'm on my way to or from somewhere, no. If I'm making a special trip, definitely. I drove up to the cities to deliver a chin, 6-1/2 hours each way, and you bet I charged for gas. With gas $2.50+ in most places, it's hard not to. I look at it this way too - it's a heck of a lot cheaper than shipping.

I don't - as long as I am already planning to go there.

If a buyer asks me to travel say, to the mainland, and I am not planning to go that way for a long while, then yes I'd expect for some compensation. It costs me up to $120 to travel just to the mainland and back by vehicle(2 hour ferry ride each way, not including gas to get wherever I am going.), and so I couldn't possibly just eat those costs for one chin or two, unless I was already planning to travel that way or the buyer was paying for the travel(if I wasn't planning to go there.).

I've traveled up to 4 1/2 hours away to drop chins off at airports or meet up with people in Seattle or Vancouver, and not charged a penny for it- but only because I was already planning to be headed there for a different occasion.

I charge if it is a long distance. If I have to ship the chin I also charge because that can be as much as the chin at times. If it is within half an hour I probably won't charge.

I'll answer from the other side. I would expect to pay if I asked someone to ship. If the chin is that important to me, then I should have figured on expenses to get him to my home.

I agree, I already expect to pay shipping charges if out of state, so I would definately calculate and expect to pay a fee for delivery by car.

Personally, since I occassionally have kits for sale I would charge a fee outside of a sixty mile radius. You need to take into account gasoline, mileage and of course your personal time.

To each his own however!!!

either view is defendable. i don't deliver not because i am cheap just because i usually cannot get away.
i have had experience with two of the top breeders in the country who delivered/met me.
one charged (was in the area any way) and one (travelled longer than I did) would not charge and finally let me buy him dinner. i bought only one at the time from the one who charged and five plus supplies from the one who did not and i am sure that made a difference but i don't think it was just that. different personalities and business models i guess.

I agree with the general consensus around here...unless I'm going there, or it's along my way to somewhere...the person is going to pay my gas and tolls. With gas the way it is that's just too much out of pocket expenses for me. I mean, why even sell a chin (especially when it's a cheap one such as $50) if you're going to pay the sam amount or more in gas getting the animal to the person? That's just the way it is here. Now, like I said (along with the others) it's a different story if you're already going. For instance, I'm going to the York show...it's a 3.5hr drive one way for me...I'm delivering 4+ chins there and not charging a penny for it because I'm already going to be there (ie-I would've had to pay for gas anyway) Just my .02

I've made "special trips" an hour or hour and a half to meet someone and didn't take gas money.. If I am going to meet someone, I try and make it somewhere where I'd like to go anyway-- near a mall(Who doesn't like to go shopping?), or something.

If I was driving 4hrs or so to deliever, it would depend..gas is slowly creeping up to $3.00(We're at about 2.55), so if it's going to cost more for me to deliever than I am getting for the chin , I would ask for a gas fee...and would expect to pay one ifthe "tables were turned".

It depends. I've had people who wanted me to drive a chin 12 hours to them. In those cases, I don't deliver at all.
If its a shorter distance and its a time of year I can get away, no, I don't charge.
When I've had people drive that far to deliver a chin for me, and they weren't going to make the drive anyway (like to a show), I've given them money, just because it seems polite.
