I was just wondering why so many people do not like Spike's Delite Hedgehog food? I've looked up the ingredients and guaranteed analysis, but I really don't see that much wrong with it. Sure is has corn in it and such, but they made it so that its more easily digestible and I don't really see the problem. Perhaps I'm wrong... but it really doesn;t look that bad to me...

Monty was fed it at the breeder, and it's his FAVORITE. I've been trying to mix in new CSFTCLS into his mix, but that's always the last thing eat eats. I think he likes Spikes because it's easier to chew...the other cat foods are really hard for Monty to eat.
I personally don't mind it at all, as long as it's mixed with other food. But I gather from other sites that Spike's Delight is one of the best "hedgehog specific" foods out there.

I have heard that it is ok in a mix. A hedgehog needs about 30% protein, under 10% to 12% fat, and about 15% fiber. What does Spikes Delight have? Some of the top ingrediants should be chicken (or other meat) meal, just plain chicken (or other meat).
I know that there are a lot of people who now more about it than I do and I would search other threads for specifics on why not to use it.

My kids personally don't touch the stuff. I had a few on it from Vickie when I got them, but switched over to a mix instead. I don't know if people don't like it so much as most people just don't prefer it as a main mix.

Spike's Delight is probably one of the better hedgehog foods out there. I think it's mostly that it's only available mail order and people would rather go to the store when they need food.

maybe the OP is thinking about Vitakraft? Now THAT brand is horrible...
What I've heard about Spike's Delight is what hedgemom just said...
I also have been using Select Diet, but they say that food is more of a treat since it has a higher sugar content. I got both foods from the breeder.

When I bought Mikey he was being fed Spike's Delite, so I bought a bag of it to bring home. I plan on getting him off of it eventually for a couple of reasons 1) I don't want to pay shipping on it, and 2) from what research I've done, everything has pointed to not having them on a corn product for food. So my goal is to have him on CSFTCLS and Natural Balance for Cats Light. So far, he'll only eat this and won't look at anything else (but it's only been 5 days).
This is what the package says it has:
Crude Protein: Not less than 32%
Crude Fat: Not Less than 12%
Crude Fiber: Not more than 6%
Moisture: Not more than 12%
The first few ingredients are:
Chicken meal, extruded yellow corn, soybean meal, extruded brown rice, fish meal, steam-rolled oat groats, extruded whole soymeal, soy hulls, vegetable oil, Brewers yeast, whole dried egg, blood meal, potassium chloride, salt, magnesium sulfate, potassium sulfate, choline chloride, and the list goes on and on.

Chicken Soup for the Cat lover's Soul. My hedgie is on the lite version of this. She seems to like it very well.

yeah, when I got my hedgie, he was on that really crappy 8-in-1 food. I've transitioned him over to a mix of CSFTCLS, Royal Canin Lite, and a Castor and Pollux lite food (which he does not like! so we'll be changing that out eventually). The only place that I've found that carries CSFTCLS is about 2 hours away--except for a local pet shop who carries the huge 18 lbs pound bags...which would take an eternity for Tator to eat!
