Nope, it's not a necessary thing, since you don't have to take them for a walk everyday. I think it would mess with their quills when they try to erect them.

Would a collar work on a hedgie????? I don't see any reason for one.

where would you put it? They don't exactly have a neck.

I think you would be just asking for trouble if you tried a collar on a hedgie, not only would it be possibly be painful for you but it also could put the hedgie at risk of choking or possible strangle it.

It is too bad though there isn't some way to have a harness or something for them. Seeing a hedgie on a walk around town would be pretty hilarious!!

With my first hedgie I had one of those adjustable ferret/bunny/cat harnesses & I tried it on her. It didn't do so well, she stumbled along like a drunk, and couldn't walk straight in it. I don't know what it is with their quills, but when I tried to dress my hedgie up in the huge doll/barbie clothes, it kinda slides off of them, and doesn't stay on. Kinda reminds me of the plastic twist ties, but they aren't twist ties, but you slide it in, and can't get them back open again unless you cut them off. That's how the hedgie quills work.
