My Lola just had her 2nd litter of Hoglets this morning. Her 1st litter was with previous owner and I was told she ate the 2 hoglets she had. This time around I want to make sure I do everything possible to ensure she tales good care of the hoglets! I was just wondering what is the recommended amount of time to leave mom and hoglets alone so she dont eat them or get stressed???? I think she had 6, but I cant tell for sure cause I dont want to disturb her. I think 1 was stillborn, should I remove it from the cage or will she get mad??? Please help, I am educated about most other stuff, Im just leery about her killing them again because of last time. Thanks

I usually leave my mommy alone with her babies for about 2 weeks with as little disturbances as possible, just to be safe.

I agree I would at least leave her and babies alone for 2-3 weeks especially if she has a history of killing babies

Ok Thanks for the info! I read somewhere to leave her alone for at least 3 weeks, maybe 4 weeks. That is going to kill me as they are so cute and its such a wonderful joy to hear those little sqeeks!! I just want to pick them all up and see their little faces! I guess I will have to hold out. Thanks again,

I think the 3-4 weeks is in extreme cases. I have heard of one freak case that the mother attacked the litter at 5 weeks but I didn't get any of the background info on that as to why she did it. Usually once they open their eyes and start to get a little quicker they can defend themselves against mom. Good luck with the hoglets and just because she attacked them last time doesn't mean she will this time. I've had moms do horrible the first time and just fine the next. :)

I agree with Sarah. First time moms often kill their babies but then are wonderful for the next litters.
I try to get my girl into a routine in the weeks leading up to delivery. I get them to come out at the same time each evening for mealies. Once the babies come they are so into that routine that when she comes out for her mealies, I have a peek.
You basically have to go with mom on when to start handling them. I get mom used to peeking first, then touching a baby while it's still in the nest, then a quick pickup. When to start all this is up to mom. :)
