Hey all, due to the recent increase in PM's about Hemi's leg, I figured I should post a big update. Not that I don't love all the concern you have about her, it just gets tedious reiterating the same thing thirty times.

Her leg is still just as swollen, albeit not as "puffy". I can see details to her leg again, yet the joint is still pretty swollen. From one angle (looking straight on), it looks like the swelling hasn't changed at all, but from another (stretching her leg out and looking from underneath), it looks like it's gone down. Either way, it's nowhere near the same size as her other legs.

Despite the swelling, it seems she's not in any pain. She walks without even a hint of a limp, wheels regularly, plays normally, and is eating/drinking normally as well. Everynight I count her kibble intake, and since injuring herself, it has actually INCREASED, despite her being on Baytril. Before medicine, she was eating about 17-21 kibbles per night. Now, she's up to about 33-40 kibbles nightly. Her water intake is normal - she drinks about half her bowl nightly, and her bowl holds about 6 ounces.

Her pooping and peeing is normal as well. Each morning, I wake up to a yucky wheel and little footprints all over her cage liners. It's a nice "motif" for her cage, I think.

I'm glad summer is on it's way though - Hemi loves to play outside. And before anyone asks, no one on our block uses any form of pesticides, and she's terrified of any insect, so there's no worry there. :) Although, she has been known to stretch out and sleep in a sunbeam outside...

So that about wraps up my update on Miss Hemi. Her follow-up vet appointment is at the end of this month. I have to double-check to make certain, but I believe it was made for April 28 or 29. At this appointment, I'll either ask for a biopsy or an ultrasound to better test for a cancer. I'm not experienced with this, so could someone tell me what is better to test for cancer? Thank you. Also, if her regular vet decides it's cancer, we'll be heading to the other end of the city for a second opinion.

Either way, if both vets say it's cancer, I've decided not to amputate or do any form of treatment. Rather, I'll let her continue on for as long as she's not suffering and then humanely put her down. No sense in risking an amputation and taking away her chances to wheel. She'd get too depressed.

And please, if you don't think what I'm doing is the "right way" to go about this, don't tell me you're appalled at my lack of action or that I'm not doing the best for Hemi. If that's all you can say, then please don't reply. Maybe it seems like I'm not doing the most I can, but believe me, I am. Maybe I'm not doing the exact thing you'd do for a hedgehog of yours, but she's not yours...she's mine, and I think I know her better.

Thanks again.

I'm sorry to hear about Hemi. If its one thing I've learn over the last four months dealing with my own Hedgie's tumor is that these are some very tough little guys =) I know that if I had a swollen leg or in Milo's case, a tumor the size of a large strawberry on my side I'd be lying around being wimpy. The little ones on the other hand run around, eat more (noticed the same thing with Milo) and speed along in their wheels all night long and even chase the cat if given the opportunity

I also commend you on your decision, its a very tough one to make, In Milo's case I've decided it was also the right thing to do. Currently he isn't much bothered by the tumor and having it removed a second time at the size its at now would risk sever complications even death, and he would be in great pain for a couple weeks after.... so I'm just going to let him enjoy what life he has left and then have him put down when he starts to suffer...

One thing you may consider trying for the swelling is putting a warm / hot damp cloth over the leg for a few minutes. The vet had me do that to see if we could get the swelling down and Milo just LOVED it! He'd lay under the cloth and make little happy clicking sounds (only heard him do that while eating a yummy treat) and then when the cloth cooled hed poke his head out to let me know to warm it up again

I'm glad Hemi isnt in any pain. I'll keep my fingers crossedj that it isnt cancer though.

I also agree with you not doing the amputation if she does have cancer, let her live out the rest of her time happily running on her wheel. :)

I've been soaking her leg in a warmer than normal tub of water mixed with Epson salts. Apparently, salted water tastes better than normal water. She just loved splashing around in the bath while I talked to her.

I've basically resigned myself to the fact that it may be cancer. She's only a year old, so it's pretty early to get it, but I know that's a big factor with hedgehogs.

Thank you for your update on Hemi. It sounds like you've done a considerable amount of serious thinking on the subject. I fully support your decision, and I'm positive that you're doing the best you can within your power. I believe that what's right and wrong depends on each individual and each case -- there's no absolute "right" in a case like this.

Like Chinchillagrl06, I'm glad that Hemi is not in pain and enjoying her life to the fullest. I pray that it's not cancer. I hope you'll remain optimistic. Best of luck at the next vet appointment. Please give Hemi big hugs & kisses for me! :hearts:

I double-checked... her appointment is April 28, at 8:30am. At least it's casual day at school that day, so I don't have to worry about looking presentable if the news is something I don't want to hear.

I'll for sure be passing around lots of hugs and kisses to her from you guys. I'm trying to stay optimistic because there's no point in getting depressed about it. :)

****, I was hoping it would go down with the antibiotics. If it were me, I'd go for a biopsy just to know what you are dealing with.

I agree on not amputating if it turns out to be cancer. Basically it would be a crap shoot as to whether the cancer would come back anyways and why put her through that only to have it return quickly. Bone cancer if that's what it is, is usually quite aggressive and chances that it has spread already are high.

This is such a hard decision for you and you just have to decide what is right for you and for Hemi and go with it.

Hugs from us all.

I was really hoping it would go down, as well, but sometimes... that just doesn't happen. I'll ask for a biopsy at her vet appointment. As strange as this is, I'm hoping it's maybe just a tumor, and not bone cancer. Any other type of cancer but that.. isn't that weird? lol.

Either way, still hoping it's not bone cancer...

I'm sorry to hear the swelling hasn't gone down for Hemi. Sounds like she is as happy as ever though, and not in any obvious pain or discomfort. I hope everything goes well at your next vet appt and NO CANCER.

Here's hoping, you guys. I'm sure all the well wishes you guys sent will help. :)
