Hey all so its time for more question. These are about playtime I want to make sure that stitch has the best playtime that he can and one of the things i was thinking about was getting some wood from a pine tree by my mom's house. I work in a bio lab and I have access to an autoclave (autoclaves kill everything living it is the standard by which all of our equipment sterilized) I was thinking about putting the sticks through the autoclave and getting a box from a new dryer I'm about to get. Then I can cut it down so he can run in and out of it and mess it up and chew to his hearts content. Anyone know if this is a good or a bad idea?

I am not sure about the autoclave. There are a few questions that come to mind:
#1: does the autoclave process involve ANY chemicals of any sort? It would be best to stay away from any chemicals, because you never know whats safe for your chin.
#2: does it kill it with a heat process? Sometimes chin owners will buy pine from Home Depot because they Kiln- Dry thier pine, which is something chins have to have done to their wood. Kiln drying it removes the phenols in it ( a naturally occuring chemical in pine that is bad for chins upper respitory system ) as well as killing any bacteria. Does the autoclave do something similar to this kiln drying with heat?
#3: What type of pine is it? Make sure it is white pine. Some types of pine can be toxic to chinnies. http://www.chinchillas2home.co.uk/safewoods.htm (this is a page about safe woods for chinnies to chew on, and should be helpful. it also talks about processing wood at home by baking it, but you have to make sure that before baking it that [pine] must be kiln dried. Read through it, it should be helpful,
I think that this autoclave sounds like it might be alright, but I would wait for some other more knowledgable people to post before doing anything. Good luck!

an autoclave kills by heat and steam basically you put water in the bottom of the autoclave it gets sealed up water turns to steam increases the pressure and heat to 200 plus degrees C. The pine is not white pine its a digger pine. I'll check out that link thanks a lot
