So I posted my chins for sale on craigslist (which in itself is asking for stupid people to contact you generally), and I got a guy asking to pick up a pet-only one for $50. I had mentioned on the ad that she was pet-only and I asked him what his intention was with her. He said it would be a pet for his grandchildren and so I said he'd have to sign a non-breeding statement and asked the ages of his grandchildren. He replied that they were 8 and 9. Sounded alright...so I gave him my phone # and he said he'd give me a call this last Tuesday - except Tuesday came and went. So I asked him if he was still interested and I got an email back saying that he was with a non-profit animal shelter and $300 was out of their budget. But I could certainly donate all the chins I have available and write them off as a donation on my taxes (for a much higher value "as retail" he noted).

So of course I was a bit peeved that the guy had lied about the chin being a pet for his grandchildren. And then to top it all off, he implies that I should -give- my animals to a shelter. I'm sure they're getting MUCH better care here than they would there - and they don't NEED a new home - it's not like I'm running out of space and desperately need to be rid of them. And to say I could donate them and write them off as a tax donation? What the ****? How do you "donate" your animal to a shelter in the first place? Isn't the point to keep animals out of shelters, thereby it being a negative to have to "donate" your animal to one? Anyways, I wrote him back saying that he'd been caught in a lie, I sincerely didn't believe he was even with a shelter, and if he was, to try rescuing animals that need to be rescued. I'm sure he's just trying to get free or cheap animals to re-sell.

Oh, and then the funny response to the ad - a girl asking to buy my "puppies" :P

If you post on Craigs people will ask about your puppies because they are thinking chihuahuas.
If the chin was listed as a pet at $50, why the comment about $300? I've never heard of a shelter buying animals. Or asking people to donate animals. Don't walk, RUN from this one! How weird.

Wow...the people that emerge out of the woodwork when you list your chins for sale in different places...

I put an ad in the paper one time and I got so many calls for chihuahuas. Honestly...why can't people READ what it says? I even got a call once for my chinchilla for sale and then before the guy hangs up he asks "those are the monkeys, right?" I mean honestly...BRAINS PEOPLE BRAINS!!!

I get the same thing, but we used to also have chihuahuas, long before we ever bred our chins. It's just people looking for cheap animals. $100 for a pedigree chihuahua is an awesome price, people see that and don't think about what they are actually reading. There is a grey coloring in chihuahuas, but it is actually called blue or something. It's been a long time. I've had people come and respond to ads even after seeing a picture of the chins in the ads and still ask for chihuahuas. I guess we all just have to patiently weed out the idiots and weirdos, for the safety of our chinnies.

Off topic but sadly I work at a vet and people come in with records from other vet clinics and you should see the way they spell chihuahua. We got one in just yesterday from a vet that said 2 yr old chiwawwaw...lol

you must have been selling all for 300$?? thats where that amount came in? i'm glad the truth came out for you, and yea.. you would think shelters don't want any more animals...
i agree with your assessment.. the guy was looking for anyway possible to get his hands on the chinnies..

I don't think I'll ever post in the paper again either. I guess I can understand misreading chinchilla as chihuahua if you were looking quickly, but don't they read the rest of the ad? I mean, I was advertising violet wraps!

Wow, what a shady *ahem*(trying to refrain from strong language)

The puppies thing made me laugh. When I got my chins, every "older" person (and by this I mean people who were mostly late 30's-early 50's vs the people in their 20's that I mentioned the chins to) made a comment about turning them into fur  and every "younger" person thought they were something else. My friend (who is DEATHLY afraid of ALL rodents, even squirrels and chins) thought they were a kind of dog, and freaked out badly when I told her what they actually were. I can't believe how ignorant of them most people are...

I've actually had several people who worked at shelters call me looking for chins as their own personal pets, but not looking to get one for free or anyhting. It does sound really shady. I'm glad the truth came out.
