Hello there everyone. I am new in this site. I have two chinchillas and I have a problem with them. THEY WONT MATE!!! I have had them together for 8 months and nothing yet. Someone told me to separate them where they can not see eachother for at leat 1 week and them let them together again. DO this work?? If not what can I do?? thank you in advance for your help. :hearts:

Hi, and welcome. First thing to do - double check and make sure they are not both the same sex....not a big deal, even big ranchers do it every once in a while :)

Just because they are male and female does not mean they will mate. And if they do end up mating, it could take much longer than 8 months. My first pair took over a year before they produced their first litter. I don't know your level of experience regarding breeding, so I won't comment except to say please research if you haven't. Just wanting a baby chinchilla is not a good enough reason to breed.

(This is in response to your email <gilerika20>, as you do not accept pm's and I felt I shouldn't just let myself be attacked in an email without the means to defend myself.)
Wow. You must have really misread my post. In no way was I attacking you. All I said was that you should research about breeding and babies before embarking on it. This forum is a great place to start. I am by no means an expert and I never stated such a thing, nor did I imply it. I have only been breeding for 2 years and there are people on here with many many more years of experience. You didn't ask for advice regarding breeding, you asked why your chinchilla wasn't pregnant. If you would like advice, there are people on here that will be happy to provide it for you if you would only state that you would like some direction. If you think my post was mean, you need to get thicker skin, because there are many on here that are much more direct and blunt that I am.

I have a wonderful pair of standards that I'd LOVE to have a baby from! They've been together for at least 18 months now - no babies, but they make a cute pair. I just keep waiting. She's Bowen & he's Fur Ball. They're both quite nice. I really want a baby. Maybe someday. I've never heard of taking them apart, but then again, we're not big time into breeding. If you're looking for advise, I'd say start a thread in the baby/breeding section. I just wanted to post to say I can relate!
Best wishes,
My boyfriend and I drove my first chinchilla to a breeder so he can pick his girlfriend. Put 2 girls in a cage with him and he cuddle up with both of them, what a stud. If I had the budget at that time, I would have bought both of the girls for him. Anyhow, he seams to be more interested in the older sister so I bought her. It's about a year since they got together and they already gave me 2 litters(2 kits and 3 kits). Treat the chins as if they are your kids. Repect them and let them pick their mate. That's how I became grandma within a year.

I see that you purchased your chins from a pet store. As everyone with breeding experience will agree, it is never, ever advisable to attempt to breed petstore quality chins. Their history, genetics, pedigree, etc., are unknown, therefore you do not truly know what possible problems you may be producing. Petstore chins are usually bred for the quick buck, not for breeding/show stock. Any breeder, whether hobbist or rancher, should strive to improve the chinchilla species, and this comes from knowing what you have in each chinchilla and what will compliment it in its mate(s) to produce better offspring. There is absolutely no problem in having petstore chins as pet only, but breeding, is not good, to put it plainly.
As for why your chins are not producing any kits yet, anyone can give you numerous reasons. There is never a guarantee that putting a male and female together will get you kits. Try researching the possible reasons - that little tab up top titled "Search" will answer any of your questions, and if you do not feel your questions are answered, post it up, but be ready/openminded for the answers/advise you are given as it is always in the best interest of the chins, not a way on putting you down. Remember that we are giving you our time in reading your questions and answering them for the sake of the chins and yourself.
Again, it is not advisable to breed petstore chins. You should be striving to improve the breed, not bring forth more problems (and again, I am not stating that there is a certainty of problems ahead, but the unknown is never a good enough reason to move forward.) I certainly hope you have researched every aspect of breeding; the possible problems, the high possibility that you may not be successful in selling the kits when weaned(if you intend to), and most importantly to be certain you have the funds available for whatever the future may hold with the possible kits.
Welcome to CnQ, and good luck in your ventures with your furbabies. Always keep the best interest of your chins in mind in what you do with them; they depend on you and are your family.

I just read your post about where you got your chins. It was my understanding that big petstores such as Petsmart only sold one sex or the other but not both :dunno: . I don't know this to be absolute, just throwing it out there. I agree with Arsaidh about breeding.
