I dont know what goes through the minds of people lately!
We have been inundated with chinnys being dumped at pet stores!
Right now, i have a pregnant female that was dumped at a pet store and the owner said he would keep her there...... not for nothing, but we have had to do a few rescue there becuase no one seemed to know that they had sick chins in the cages...this owner said that the sicxk chin was fine...... I guess fine to him was the chin being half dead!
I took the female out of his custody and she is safe with me..... but let me ask..... who in their right minds would dupm a pregnanat chin that is about to give birth at a pet store???
Then someone else dumpmed seven chins at another pet store, the one that i deal with for my supplies...... there was a mother there with a couple of day old babies.... The owner there called the rescue and said that one of the babies was not doing so good..... well.... Renee goes there the next day and both babies are dead and still in the cage, mind you the woner never took them to the vet and never checked the cage until the rescue came in..... The mom was in there with her dead babies for almost 10 hours, maybe longer........
needless to say I WILL NOT be shopping there anymore and i am fed up with the stupidity of people........
Does anyone still care about their animals anymore?

One quick question... was the pregnant chin one that was left at the supply store?
If it was dropped there, I understand not taking them to the vet, those animals aren't the owners responsibility. But what should have been done is called someone knowledgable to come and take them, and he did call saying they were not doing so well. That doesn't make the whole situation right, but if someone dropped a dog with two broken legs in your yard would you take it to the vet and pay the bill? How would you handle that?
And yes the babies should've been taken out, who knows how long they were in there. The orginal owners are the ones who should have taken responsibility by dropping them at a vet, humane society, or an actual rescue, not just a supply store. Sorry if I'm off base, but that's just what I understood.

That makes me sick! Two rescues I had here were dumped at a construction site in the middle of summer and almost died!!

That's just not right... I don't think dumping an animal anywhere is right, again it's the responsibility of the OWNERS to get them to a proper rescue. So just as a note for people who run rescues try to make yourself known to people! Let vets know, maybe put up fliers a couple times a year, so these people know where to take these animals! Personally I like to contact Humane Societies and vet, and I always put on my fliers for supplies that I offer rescue services. Let people know that you're a "no tell" rescue. So they aren't afraid of getting in trouble for just dropping them off. :soapbox:

the cuteness factor wears off, the time and expense is greater than one anticipated, just don't want the pet anymore...
those work for dogs/cats, so apparently for chin's too...
as long as they're are animals and people who *think* they want them, sad stories like above will happen.. look how overrun animal shelters stay with dogs/cats..
there is no excuse for leaving dead babies in with a mom for so long, and none imo for dumping any animal...
and i agree with nicole, if you run a rescue get it out there... so people will know there are better, safer options than dumping at store's or in the middle of nowhere..
I had two baby guinea pigs that died. They were 3 months old, we went away for 2 hours (they had food and water). When we got back they were both dead. They were living with mom and we never found out what happened. That may have been the case with the baby chins. You might try offering to post bg signs on the pet store stating that you are a rescue and willing to take in the pets for free. There are many people that dump their pets so they dont get in trouble with the ASPCA. I know we have a lot of cats dumped on our farm. We must had a sign out front. Around here if you turn in a pet you can't ever adopt fromm them. And ir you do you get a huge abnormal (not the regular) checking out. They may not want to take the risk for being charged with animal cruelty. Just my 2 cents.

right now i am awaiting for the babies to come....... It just boggles my mind how someone could just dump their animal............
I have close to $10k in vet bills and everyone around me says that i should get "rid" of my chins...... I treat my chins as if they were my children....if only others would do the same!

I treat my animals the same as you do graham, but thats not the case with many other people. Especially if the animal may require vet assistance. The people on this board love their pets very much and would do just about anything for them, but a lot of others aren't the same. My dad for example. If he had a chinchilla and it needed a vet, he would shoot it, or give it away. My little sister is the same way. My mom and I are different. We would give our right arm to safe the animal. it's just the way some people are and it sucks. I'm glad you took these guys in graham. I agree with Riven, make yourself known. Put fliers in pet stores all around you. Most usually have bullitan boards that people look at. Or ask to put one above the chinchillas cage. Put them in the humane society, everywhere. Let people know that you take them and that you'll take good care of them. :) Good luck
