has anyone ever heard of a hedgie haivng seizures? I've been having my new hedgie (yet to be named- thinking about quillt) lay on me while I read as she hasn't unballed for me since the second day I got her. Anyway, I swear she looked like she was having a seizure. She just started to shake and was making weird noises with her mouth. Almost like what a cat sounds like when it is cleaning itself. Afterwards she unballed for a bit and is now back to a ball. I guess if she does have seizures she is in the right home... I have a 5 year old son who has intractable epilepsy. :cry2:

Oh HONEY!!! I'm not sure if it was a seizure or not but I've never heard a hedgehog make any sorts of noise that sounds like a cat. Do you have a knowledgable vet in your area that you could call and ask? I'm not sure there is much to do if she is having seizures. I really hope you find out what is wrong and best wishes to you and your family.

Are you sure she isn't just doing the little "twitch" thing before they settle down and lay down? I didn't know what Herbie was doing the first time he did that. Kahlua doesn't do it at all. I hope it isn't seizures. I would go to the vet and have it checked out if you are worried about it just to rule out that it is/isn't seizures. We will keep our fingers and quills crossed here that everything is ok.
Then again was she popping or jumping? I read the post again and the cat noises confuse me. But popping and just being grumpy could be mistaken too.

I have to say that hedgehogs seem to do some of the strangest things and make the weirdest sounds. Either or both of my two have done this "pulsating" throbbing-looking thing, a twitchy thing, a rattle that sounds like a rattlesnake, the hiss, the popping, etc. I don't know about how prone they are to seizures, and hopefully yours was just doing one of these bizarre hedgehog routines!

I'm keeping an eye on her. She is eating and drinking plenty. I stayed by her for quite awhile last night. then decidided that since she is so shy I'd put her back where she was comfortable. I called one vet near me. they have someone who will treat hedgies but doesn't know a lot about them. they said they may need to sedate to treat a hedgie. I don't like that idea. I will be calling around.
