Lily had her babies today.
There were three.
Sadly, one was dead when I discovered them. The other two she abandoned. Me and Jason rushed out and got kitten formula and a lil syringe and lil bottle to feed them. We warmed them up and are feeing them every two hours. So far, everything is going really well. They were almost motionless when discovered, now they never stop moving and are nice and warm.
I am setting into getting up periodically tonight and for the next couple of weeks. Me and Jason have set up a schedule where one of us will always be here every two hours to check on them and feed them.
Please pray for the lil ones...
And please no harsh words. We are absolutely in love with these lil guys and are doing everything we can for them...
Thank you...

Sorry to hear you lost one, but sounds like you're doing great with the two surviving babies. Hope you and Jason will be able to keep up the nursing duty until they are completely out of the woods. We'll keep our fingers and quills crossed for the newborns!

I know this is going to sound off the wall but the best place to keep them during the day if you can is in your bra. The skin contact helps them out greatly. Also they don't seem to dyhdrate as easily with the natural mositure from your skin. Also make sure you are making them potty after every single feeding. Otherwise they will start to bloat and you will surely lose them. Lastly most breeders use puppy formula on the hedgies because you can see the "milk spot" easier. Hope that helps

Hello,
In addition to the KMR you may want to order (veterinary catalog) some kitten formula that is really a form of powdered goats milk, it also has benifical bacteria and colostrum (sp?). It helped me raise 1 hedgie from birth, the other 3 died due to injury from a canabalizing mom. I believe the Fosters and Smith catalog carries the goat milk formula. The KMR is good to use for the first week to keep them strong, but the bacteria and colostrum is needed to help them survive longer than a week.
Good Luck!

I used to use the KMR when handfeeding babies, but lost basically every baby I tried to bloat. I now use the Esbilac puppy formula, it still isn't perfect, but I have better luck with it than I did the KMR. You can also get powdered goat colostrum from many vet offices, especially "country" vets. I have just started trying it, so haven't made any concrete judgements there.
I am currently handraising a baby also, he is now 10 days old and I have had him since he was less than 12 hours old. So far he is doing pretty good. Keep fingers crossed! And he spends large amounts of time in my bra, it is the perfect location for a baby hedgehog.

It is so funny to hear that you should keep them in your bra. It makes perfect sense, because it would be a nice warm place. When I first got Daisy, that is where she would always try to get to to snuggle. I thought it was so weird. Maybe she was bottle raised?? Who knows. Either that or she just likes to get fresh.

lol...thank you for the bra tip, i was told that one already by penny!
we have them set up with a heating pad and feed every 2-2 1/2 hours, night and day. i stimulate them to "do their business" after each feeding and both are deficating well. they are also eating a lot better now. i was a lil worried at first. they wouldnt eat very much and had to be prodded to eat. now they pretty much eat right from the start once they realize i have the lil nipple at their mouths :) they are sooo cute when eating, and crawling, and well...everything they do. they are quite vocal an active lil buggers ;) god i love them so much!
