Hello! :hello: I just joined up. My name is Angel, and I'm in the Florida panhandle. I'm currently in search of a sweet hedgie to call my own. :) It will be my first hedgie, but I have owned other exotics including a chinchilla (which, unfortunately, I had to give away when I moved because I felt horrible for not having enough time to play with him during the move, and after I moved) and two pot-bellied pigs (which my mother has now because I don't have a big enough yard for them and my dogs down here). I currently own a miniature schnauzer and a husky, and they're both spoiled rotten. But I can't wait to get another exotic. I have done LOTS of research about hedgies (started researching them before I got my chinchilla 5 years ago), and I finally feel comfortable bringing one home. Now it's just a matter of finding the perfect hedgie for me. :D

Well, that's all for my introduction. Hope to learn from all of you, and maybe even pass on some of what I've learned.

Do lots of research on a breeder (ask around) and WHS (http://www.wobblyhedgehog.org) (here (http://www.angelfire.com/wa2/comemeetmyfamily/wobblyhs2.html), too)as well.

Wobbly Hedgehog Syndrome is a genetic disease that is recessive and does not show up right away.

Check for a healthy animal first, then choose by personality. :)

Thanks for the website. I had seen a bit of information about it on another site a while back, but never saw those. I will definitely do further research on WHS.

Welcome to chins-n-quills! I am still pretty new here myself. Good luck finding your hedgie, they are so sweet. I just got my first about a week ago and I just love her!

Thanks for the welcome ya'll! I have FINALLY found a local breeder. I sent her an email yesterday, but haven't heard back. Hopefully she's still breeding.

Also, we're starting construction on the custom cage soon, so hopefully I'll have some pictures of the progess. I'm really excited about building it as well.

Refrain from using too much wood, none if possible. It attracts mites and they cause alot of problems with hedgehogs. Also, wood can have a number of chemicals in it that can be hazardous to your hedgehog.

I work in a machine shop so most of the frame will be done in stainless... Might use some wood on the corners just as reinforcements to make sure everything is level. Anyone ever built a stainless cage?
