Hello. I'm new to the forum and to hedgehogs. I'm in the process of trying to figure out if a hedgehog is for me. Currently, I have a turtle and two geckos in a one bedroom apartment, so clearly expenses and space are my main concerns. I want to be sure I can devote the time/resources I need to to a new pet.

I want to ask for your opinions on where to get a hedgehog. I haven't found a breeder nearby and I'm having trouble finding pet shops that carry them (in NY, just north of the city). I want to see one before I decide if I want to own one. Any opinions/suggestions?

You sound a lot like me a few months ago. I had never touched a hedgehog and was trying to decide it they were right for me. I recommend finding a breeder or a person who has hedgehogs that you could see and visit with. I am sure there is someone on the site somewhat close to you that would let you meet their hedgehogs. I am in Washington state so unless you are coming to Seattle any time soon...not really an option :) Pet stores kinda concern me because most I have seen and heard of do not have much hedgehog knowledge. There is really a lot to know and understand about them so it is a good idea to find somebody who knows a lot. So far since I have had my hedgie ( a week) we have already bonded a lot and she is getting used to me really fast. They are sweet and fun but do have some special needs. I am sure that turtles and geckos do too, so you are probably used to it. Anyway, I think they are sweet but definetely visit some before you make your final decision. Good Luck!

Hedgehogs are illegal in The 5 Boroughs of New York City .. but not everywhere in New york!!

Hedgehogs in space are in New York and they are USDA licenced!- here is their website: http://hedgehogcentral.com/breeding/hedgehogsinspace/

I am located in New York, about five hours north of the city. Actually I just had a littler born today.

Just read read read about them before you make any decisons. I educated myself on hedgehogs for about six months before I got my first one. It is definatly a good idea!

they are a great pet and pretty easy to take care of but do yourself and the hedgie a favor and do plenty of reasearch and reading about them before getting one, also as mentioned above do go to a breeder and make sure that it is going to be a pet that you will want and that will fit your lifestyle not something you are going to get tired of in a few months, and keep in mind that they can live 3-10 years old in captivity so make sure that you are willing to be able to care for them $ money $ wise and be able to give them the one on one time that they need.It would also be a good Idea to find a vet near you that you could take him/her to if needed. If you have any questions please ask any of us on this forum and we will do are best to anwser them to the best of are knowledge. P.s. get them from a good breeder and not a pet store
