Okay i'v been thinking about this for awhile. Im really thinking of getting a hedgie i used to have 2 when i was 10 one died sadly (was given to me sick) and the other was given away. I got them both from a breeder that my mum worked with at some computer tech place my girlfriend just got one not to long ago and every time i go there i always play with him and now i really miss mine. I know more then the average person about them so i know i wont be rushing into them i have the time and money for him\her too but have one qustion would it be best to get them from a breeder or from a petstore my girlfriend got hers from a petstore and im a bit weerrrry about them. I know with chins you should go to a breeder would that be the same case for a hedgie? And if i do get one i want its to be black with really really white tiped quils but i dono if hedgies come in different "colors" thank you for the answers they'v been bugging me for awhile now .

For mulitple reasons, I would recommend getting your hedgehog from either a reputable breeder or a a rescue/rehome situation. Either way, a wellness check would help out. As far as the colors go, check out http://hedgehogcentral.com/colorguide.shtml . It sounds like the color you want (black banding on white quills) is going to be a salt and pepper hedgehog. I've always found it odd that so many pet stores and other people think its the most common color and call most everything shy of a cinnacot or a snowflake a "salt and pepper" hedgie. It is actually my understanding that these are one of the most difficult colors to breed for or to find.

Quite honestly, I have no qualms about a petstore hedgie -- if you're prepared for all the illnesses. My girl is from a petstore, and she's an awesome hedgehog. But, she's just over a year old and has an aggressive form of osteosarcoma. She could possibly be inbred.
Petstore hedgies can be more expensive than breeders, also. I know when I get my next one, it will be from a breeder.
As for the color, I agree. It sounds like a salt-and-pepper. I think I've seen one in person, ever. Strangely, it was at a petstore. This little girl had the darkest face mask, and her quills were black. Very few quills were white. Still, I'm not sure if it was S&P. Those can be very difficult to find, and most breeders may hike the price right up. I think your best bet would be to go for a grey or a chocolate. More common, unless you're willing to wait for months months for the specific color.

I got both my hogs from a breeder here in Massachusetts. I paid around $185 for my Chocolate F & $225 for my Cinnacot Uber Pinto F. Great prices for me because my hogs temperments are amazing. :) Mah' lil girls. I've read you can spend anywhere from $100-$300 on a hedgehog, depending on your area and breeder.

Why hello there Kelly! :) Both girls are awesome. Eggnog is absolutely amazing. She is SO sweet, it's almost gross, shes so laid back and an all around cuddler.
My lil testament here because I am SO happy with my hedgies. Hamor Hollow hedgies are amazing. They are SO sweet! The time that Kelly & Sean spend with the hogs really reflects in their personalities! Both my girls unrolled the day I brought them home and I just cant say enough amazing things about Hamor Hollow. I :hearts: HAH!
