I dont prefer either. I have both ;) They each have their own cons such as:

Males need hair ring checks

Females may spray when mad at you....

I always suggest males for first time people, as I find them to be more laid back for the most part. Females are the bosses in the chinchillas world!

Both usually make great pets, though.

Just buy from a reputable breeder because pet stores mis-sex chins all the time. I wanted boys.. but since my first chin was mis-sexed.. I went with little girls.. I got the "spraying" end of the deal.

I subscribe to the theory that there really is no difference between the sexes, aside from the obvious spraying bit. I know one breeder I buy from spends lots of time with her babies and the two I bought from her are male and female. They are my friendliest chins by far. Now the petstore ones, I won't even get started on.

My first chin was a male and he was the rare lap chin. Very cuddly and loveable. My second was a female who only enjoys being pet from between the bars. I guess she knows I can't grab her that way. lol Then I have a pair that hates being touched. I got them in Jan and was told they were skittish. I've been working on socializing them and they've actually improved alot. My latest additions came the end of April. The male was very curious and friendly from day one. I can now pet and scratch his neck and chin. He's not thrilled with being picked up or held though. The female was and still is a little more reserved. I have been able to pet her a few times. She fusses about being picked up but, once I have her she just buries her face in my elbow and is totally calm.
All that being said...my females aren't unfriendly, just not as cuddly as my males. None of my chins have ever bit or sprayed. I have no preference toward either gender as a whole. All animals have different personalities. I suggest finding a breeder that you can go to and interact with some chins to see what their personalities are like.

I agree with Becky and usually suggest males for first time owners. I find most(but not all) females are rather dominating and witchy. It's like PMs 365 days of the year with most of them, LOL. The males I find are usually more pleasant and easy to handle.
I only have maybe one male here who is not super friendly of the bunch.
