View Full Version : Food For Hedgie, And Personal Allergies

Hi all,

I've had Ci Wei, my hedgie, for about four months now, and I have a few questions.

1) His urine smells horribly bad... I'm using paper towels for a litter area, which he sometimes uses, and other times decides he'd rather curl up in them. I try to change them daily, but whew! What a smell! I've heard different foods can make hedgies have smellier poos or pees than others. Ci Wei is currently on the "Solid Gold" cat food - is this one that is known to create smellier urine? Or does it depend entirely on the hedgie? Can anyone recommend a food that is less likely to cause strong-smelling urine but is still healthy for my hedgie? Thanks.

2) I'm also finding I seem to be having some minor sinus things going on. I don't know if this is due to the time of year, or if it is perhaps made worse by Ci Wei. I have had allergies in the past to everything living on the face of the planet (plants, trees, grass, dogs, cats, birds, dust, etc), but the allergies died down enough that I'm no longer on any meds for them and have been doing okay until recently. For those here who may have mild allergies to their hedgie(s), or whose family members do, is there anything you can do to keep the reaction to a minimum? Does it help to thoroughly clean the cage more often, like once a day or something? I don't have a lot of time, but will do what I can to fix the problem. I quit using aspen pellets thinking that was the problem, but it seems to be getting worse with time. Primary symptoms are runny nose, sneezing, and occasionally itching eyes. Any ideas are appreciated.

3) Ci Wei doesn't seem to be eating nearly as much as he was a month or so ago, and the same goes for drinking. Do hedgies usually eat/drink more in the wintertime? Or could there be other factors? He is eating a little bit each night, but probably only half or 3/4 what he was before, and this has been going on for at least a week. Should I be concerned, or am I overly worried about the little guy? Thanks in advance for all of your input, and God bless..

How old is Ci Wei? They slow down on eating once they are full grown, usually around 5-6 months. As long as he is active and acting normally I wouldn't worry too much about the decrease in food unless he is loosing weight also.

With the hot weather alot of people seem to complain about stronger smelling urine. My gang certainly do.

This is prime allergy season right now and I've heard that it is one of the worst ever. Maybe that is the reason you are having symptoms. What are you using for bedding? Any of the commercial beddings are dusty and with allergy season at its worst the dust from bedding could be the bit extra needed to make you react. If you don't already you could try using liners. If you do use liners, try adding a bit of vinegar to the rinse water to help cut any odor or soap residue.

How often do you bath him? Often a dirty hedgehog will cause more allergy problems than a clean one. You don't even need shampoo. Just plain water. :)

try Innova evo cat food, or chicken soup for the cat lovers soul, or royal canin slim 37-38, Most cat foods with high amounts of fillers and fish will make their urine and poop smell very bad.

(1) I followed Nancy's advice on using vinegar in rinsing water -- placing a cup of vinegar and water mixture in the fabric softener compartment so that it gets released into the wash automatically, and voila! the strong pee smell is gone!! I highly recommend it.

I don't know if any particular food causes their urine to smell worse. I think it has more to do with male hormone. However, their poop is a different story. I did notice some cat kibble seem to cause Geoffrey's poop to smell worse.

(2) My allergy is worse this year than normal. It could be that. But also I'm having my lips puffing up a lot lately, which never was a typical allergy symptom for me in the past. I'm not sure if our hedgie is causing the puffy lips, but it's true I've been kissing him.

(3) Did you have a heat spell in your area lately? We did and I noticed Geoffrey's appetite was down during the spell. It could be the weather.

Thanks for the advice! To answer some questions, Ci Wei is 6 months old, so I'm assuming the decrease in food is due to aging. Whew! That makes me feel better.

Also, I've only given Ci Wei a full bath once since getting him in late February. I think the bath was April-ish. I heard hedgies shouldn't be bathed too often due to dry skin, but I think he may be due for another one. :p I have given him just a foot bath before, but I think I'd better go all out this time due to the allergies and all, plus hopefully enough time has passed so he should be fine.

That reminds me, he needs his nails trimmed. Any great ideas on how to do this without injuring him? I'd prefer to do it alone, since he's still a bit nervous around others, but somehow I think he may not like me trimming his nails. I thought about doing it during bath-time somehow while he's in the water and can't ball up, but I'm afraid he'll somehow get a nose-full of water and get sick... any ideas? :dunno:

Regarding the vinegar idea, I usually wash his liners (yes, it's liners rather than bedding) in the regular washer. I like the idea of putting vinegar in with it so it will be automatically released into the cycle, but how much should I put in? The loads are usually small, usually one or two liners, a hedgie hat, and a few small blankies (very small). I don't want to overdo it, so is there a certain ratio you use to mix it? Hmm... maybe I'm a little bit too concerned here... but hey, it's for Ci Wei, I can't help it! ;)

Thanks again for all of your help. God bless.

Regarding the vinegar idea... how much should I put in?I'm mixing a 1/4 cup white vinegar with 3/4 cup water for a small load (usually 2 liners, 2 hedgie bags and 2 blankies), but I think you should experiment. The required amount for the best result may vary depends on the size of each load, the size of your fabric softener dispenser, how soiled/smelly the load is, etc.

Nancy uses vinegar every 3rd or 4th wash. I've been using it in every wash as Geoffrey's pee is mighty stinky. I used to change his liner every couple of days and soaked it in bleach overnight before washing it, yet I still couldn't get the pee smell out. But with vinegar, once a week seems sufficient (Note: we doubled the size of his cage and it probably contributed to better odour control too).

I must admit I was a bit skeptical at first about the use of vinegar (sorry, Nancy!). I was afraid the wash would come out smelling like... well... vinegar. But to my surprise, everything comes out nice and fresh, not acrid or pungent at all. I don't know how it works, but it works like a charm! :)

The urine smell! Ugh. Does Ci Wei have a litter box? I noticed that giving Hemi a litter box with Yesterdays News in it really helped for the smell. Even if I don't clean it for a weekend (when I go out of town), it doesn't smell. And her urine smells something awful on paper towels or liners.

You think Hemi's pee smells. Try having a couple of pregnant girls. You cannot fully appreciate how good normal hedgie urine and poop smells until you have lived with a pregnant girl or two.
