Curtis and I will be going to Eugene for an extended weekend and have decided to bring Wolfgang with us. This will be Wolfgang's first vacation and I'd love to hear any pointers you all might have.

He has been in the car before; we got him from Deneen who lives in Eugene, and he did a great job on the drive to Portland when we brought him home. He was extremely excited and wouldn't settle down till I put a blanket over his carrier.

His normal pen is way too big to pack along so I bought a Rubbermaid-type bin to use as his "motel room." It's the 25-gallon size, so it's pretty big (not sure of the exact dimensions). I'll be taking liners and blankies (of course), his two hedgie bags (which he now ADORES Nancy, by the way), his wheel, his regular food & water bowls, a tp tube and a cat ball to play with, his regular food (duh), some Rescue Remedy, and his mealworms. And the digital thermometer so I'll know if the van and the room we'll be staying in are warm enough for him.
If it looks like there will be enough room without getting too crowded in there I'll add in his PVC pipe. I don't think he'll be too concerned if it's not there; half the time he'll sleep in it, the other half he'll burrow in or under his hedgie bag or his liner.

So, am I forgetting anything? :dunno:

If any of you experienced travelers have tips, I'd love the insight.

I recommend taking some baby wipes or napkins just in case.

Thanks for asking this question! I'm going on vacation for a week in a little while and I don't trust any one to take care of my little guy. So I am bringing him with us. Can't wait to see what other people say!

Hey! I just noticed that we both have hedgehogs from Deneen!!! The aren't related though cause my Rosie was born on March 22 and your Wolfgang was born on April 11th...but hey they are kinda cousins, right?!

Switch him over to a popular brand of bottled water, so his tummy doesn't get upset. Water tastes different in different areas, and he may not drink it if it's different. It's less hassle to let him have bottled water that to pack water from home, because if you run out, you can go to any store and buy another bottle.

And maybe bring a heating pad just in case the hotel room is chilly. Or even, his space heater if there's room.

Another member here, hularious, pointed out a very good article entitled "Road Trips with Hedgehogs" in the HWS's newsletter. Check it out (the article it on Page 9)! Personally, a laminated contact info sheet is a great idea... :)

P.S. Has Wolfgang stopped wearing the poop hat yet?

My hedgie also has a 'vacation home' for traveling in the car. We've made quite a few short road trips with her (3-6 hrs) and I don't really think she even notices as long as the temperature in the car is good. Around here even a few minutes in the sun and a parked car gets to be about 8,000 degrees. If we stop to eat or something I usually put her in a little purse like carrier we have and bring her in. She usually sleeps.

Actually, Wolfgang was born November 7th. Not sure where you read April 11th?
Who are Rosie's parents? Wolfgang popped out of Firefly and Freckles. :)

Hahaha, thanks for asking! So far, yes, he has, TOUCH WOOD. He seemed so delighted with his last bath (heh) and he hasn't put one on since then; maybe he was doing it out of stress of some sort?

We're actually not staying in a hotel; Curtis' grandparents have an awesome apartment under their main house that we always use when we're in town. The van will be a little packed to bring his radiator with, but heating pad, yes, excellent.

Many thanks for all the tips, you guys! Water DOES taste different in Eugene, you're so right about that.
