Hi

I am new to hedgies an in the very early research stages. I am wondering if it is possible to keep hedgies in some type of heated vivarium in order to maintain the correct temperature, but to have the vivarium located in a shed outside. The shed is insulated and does not drop below freezing it has power and light too.

Any ideas?

I don't think anyone does that here, and just to warn you, it may not be well-received. Hedgehogs need a temperature over 23 degrees Celsius to avoid hibernation. Keeping them in a cage inside your house would be much better for them.

In addition to what Courtney said- Im not sure why youd want to do that anyways. In my mind the point on having a pet is to spend time with it, to interact with it, and enjoy it. Unless youre planning on living out in the shed....

Id also be worried about temperatures dipping, or your hedgie getting hurt and no one being around to catch it on time.

Maybe, but who really advocates that?

I agree. Why have a pet to keep it out in a shed. That's like people who have dogs and keep them outside in a kennel. What is the point? :dunno:

UGH! My neighbor has a dog that they keep outside at all times. I feel so bad for him. AND he has an invisible fence

Sometimes I walk over there and visit him.

And my friend has dogs that they keep in a huge room just for them in the basement. they dont let them around the house. they play with them outside, but they always look so unhappy which breaks my heart :cry2:

That doesn't sound like a good idea at all. I agree with all the previous posters, what is the point of having a pet if you aren't even around it???

There's a big difference between a hedgie outside and a dog outside. We had an outdoor dog because she just could not be trusted in the house. If the dog is built correctly (I'm not saying you put a chihuahua outside) and given a proper shelter and interaction time, there is nothing wrong with this. You still take it to the vet, play with it, and give it all the attention it needs, it just does not belong indoors unless the weather is unpleasant.
