Welcome to the board. :)
My chinnies are Petco and chins. Travis was REALLY, REALLY shy and Shanna was very hyper and a biter when we 1st got them. I am happy to say that Travis is no longer shy like he was . He will always be a little skittish but I don't feel that is a bad thing. Shanna has turned into a little sweetheart. She is no longer super hyper and does not bite at all. She has a wonderful personality.
Unfortunatly, Chins do not get the best care & treatment in most pet stores. With a little love, care and patience they can turn out to be the most wonderful pets. I guess it's all about if you are up for helping out a chin in need.
Sad to hear about the chins in your local store. It FUMES me everytime I read a petstore story...... :(

Hi, and congratulations, you are a soon to be chin-owner! I have two chins and one came from Petco. She is the biggest sweetheart and one of the best pets I've ever had. Shy is okay as long as it doesn't bite or kick you, although you can tame a biter pretty easily. I wouldn't buy one that kicks and doesn't like to be held. My male is like that and I've had him since November. Also you shouldn't keep the chin and the ferrets in the same room or let them play together. The ferrets could easily kill the chin. They are very playfull and will want the chin to play too, and the chin will most likely be frightened silly of the ferrets.

That's not true. Ryerson's are 159 miles from Dayton.

And they sell chinchillas.

Welcome to Chins-n-Quills, hopefully you'll be able to find your perfect chin. =) Also, I would be careful with the cage that you described. The one with all the tubes that go all around the outside of the cage, chins need proper ventilation and they can easily overheat in those tubes. A plain cage with plenty of shelves and ledges would be just fine. =)

I thought I posted this somewhere, but I don't see it. John Lange lives IN Dayton and has a lot of chins to choose from. He's got everything from standards to sapphires. If you'd like his contact info, let me know. There is no need to go to Petsmart unless you simply choose too. There are a gaggle of breeders in Ohio. You practically trip over them everywhere you go.

Welcome!
And also a little warning...your future chin will annihilate that cage. Two of my chins came in that one and every tube, shelf, hammock, and clamp has been thoroughly chewed to death and had to be replaced with all wooden shelves until we built them their own mansions. If the hammocks are good washable fleece, that can be okay, but if they are those brightly colored animal pattern thin ones, you'll go through them quick! Just try and plan ahead with this, chins live a long time, so paying a little bit more for lasting equipment can be the way to go. :)
Oh, just read through the rest of the thread, but yay on the mansion.
