so i was reading the Pet Store Chinchilla thread & came across the reply that mentioned about a couple people who took actions to get their local pet store to improve their conditions & another got shut down. so i got to wondering... has anyone ever taken it further, as in taking action against the companies that sell these products for chinchillas that are really no good for them? does anyone think that a difference could be made with these companies? it is not like they will stop selling these products because too many people buy them. so many times i go to a pet store or even see online all these foods & treats & toys that say they are for chinchillas. but are made of stuff that is really bad for chinchillas. i dont know how they can get away with saying it.

Nobody has taken action against these companies [and I assume you mean legal] because the lawsuits would get tossed out of court the first day. Think of it like the McDonald's thing...some blame the current obesity trend on restaurants like McDonald's. McD is not good for you but McD's nutrition table clearly show the 48% fat content etc. but people still choose to eat there and it doesn't outright kill you like a poison or toxin would. The companies making yummy but not nutritious chin food are protected the same way. They list the ingredients and it's pretty much buyer beware from there.
People are trying but it can only be done one store or company at a time I'm afraid.

not necessarily legal. but didnt know if a company got enough complaints (the product maker or the store who sells) or letters or whatever... if they would care to do something. many people who buy their products at a store will assume the popular brand names that say their product is for chinchillas is actually good & safe for them. especially people who are new owners or dont think they would have to do research to see if something for a chin is actually ok to give them.

My gripe about the things in pet stores would have to be the Super Pet line. Super Pet specializes in small animal supplies but many of those products are flimsy (the cages) or plain not good for chinchillas (plastic components or toys) and sadly thats all the pet shops stocks.
I heard Kaytee is improving their line of chinchilla food, to compete with Mazuri.

Let us just leave bad customer reviews on all superpet's poor pet products.
OR
get together and make a cult movie like "Supersize Me" for chinchilla's and get some you know like random celebreties like Pam Anderson (she's with **** right?) and I dunno, John Stamos? He's pretty cool, people would listen to him.
Seriously though, all we can do is just continue to support companies like people who make toys and know about chins, and just ignore the bad companies and try to spread the word about the good.

Now I would like to see pet food companies have to produce leaftlets like the fast food joints do. Show what the chin recommended levels are [chins do have them don't they?] and then beside it what their own food contains. Might open a few eyes. :dunno:
Wait a minute! Was there an actual movie called "Supersize Me"??? http://www.chins-n-quills.com/jIRC/classes/applet_images/banghead.gif Oh man I'm getting old.
