:dizzy: Hi my name is Tina "Britsmom"
This is a heck of a way to introduce myself and say hi.....but
I bought a hedgehog on Wednesday for my neice. We kept it here for a few days and was planning on giving it to her on Tuesday.
Well...........
My husband woke up this am and heard chirps in the cage.
WE have 2 babies and I need some fast answers please since
this is a total shock and not what we were expecting.
How long can they be in labor and deliver babeis?
I did some quick research this am when we found them and got some basics down, but we need all the help we can get.
Thanks in advance
Tina

First off try not to disturb the mother. When they feel uncomfortable they tend to canniblize the litter. Also what kind of nest box do you have for her? Make sure she doesn't have any sort of wheel or toys in her cage that she can hurt the babies with. They will be blind and hairless for 18 or so days. It's not recommended to mess with the babies sooner then 3 weeks but since you just got the mom you might want to hold off a little longer then that. Weaning is done around 6 weeks of age. Oh and don't even attempt to clean the cage for a while. spot cleaning here and there is okay but a full blown cage cleaning is going to have to wait until it's safe for the hoglets.
Just out of curiosity did you get this hedgie from a pet store or breeder? You might want to let them know what happened. If there were other females in with a male they could be others in for a baby surprise.

Thanks so much for all the information.
We did get her at a pet store. So far, so good.
We have not disturbed her at all. I didn't think about calling
the pet store.
WE don't have breeders here in Colorado that I could find.
I have beeen looking since March. :)
I will keep you posted on how things are going. I need to gently pull her toys out of the cage though.
She has a little tupperware cubby with a blue cloth over it.
That is what she has had since we set her up.
She has been a love with us since the first day we got her.
So we were even more surprised to find the babies this am.
Thanks again

You need to go to www.hedgehogvalley.com (http://www.hedgehogvalley.com) and www.daizymeadows.com (http://www.daizymeadows.com) and read about hedgie.

Hello Tina and Welcome to C&Q. Hey at least you found some help and are asking questions. I know nothing about hedgies but wanted to Congratulate you on your new FAMILY memebers. I am guessing you will be needing a new Birthday present for your neice and she can have a baby Hedgie later on when they are old enough LOL! Please share pictures of them later on when they get old enough to hold and take some.
BEST WISHES
